‘The Martin Place’

In April 2017, I started to learn photojournalism as part of my interests in socio-political matters. This video is the first task to question the order of capitalist system in Australia. My attempt was to document the occupation of Martin Place—one of the most expensive addresses in Sydney—by homeless people. Giving it a critical artistic approach, I decided to shoot the homeless in the background, blurred in the same way we usually see them in the media. In this way, I challenge both the cliché act of photojournalist in taking a clear photo of poverty and misfortune; and ridicule the media for censoring them. In this context, I set an object of our everyday life as a ‘sympathiser element’ in the foreground and the shadow of people in the background!
For some reasons, I could not finish the project. However, I decided to publish it in its unfinished format because of what happened just recently. According to ABC News, inside the Sydney street kitchen offering safety to the homeless was shut down for ‘public nuisance’.
Apparently, my photos are one of the last documentations of the place. So, as a person who had spent some quality time with the occupants of Martin Place, I feel the urge to say that the place was the most peaceful corner of this chaotic city. It has all warmth and humanity. However, I can understand who might be irritated! It’s not ‘the public’ but those people with stupid suits and shoes that cannot think of anything but their vain life.
